چکیده

High resolution, 1.1, 1.6, and 2.2 μm imaging of the luminous infrared galaxy NGC 6090 obtained with NICMOS of the Hubble Space Telescope are presented. These new observations are centered on the two nuclei of the merger, and reveal the spiral structure of the eastern galaxy and the amorphous nature of the western galaxy. The nuclear separation of 3.2 kpc (H0 = 75 kms −1 Mpc) indicates that NGC 6090 is at an intermediate stage of merging. Bright knots/clusters are also visible in the region overlapping the merging galaxies; four of these knots appear bluer than the underlying galaxies and have colors consistent with young (≤ 10 yr) star clusters. The spatial coincidence of the knots with the molecular gas in NGC 6090 indicates that much of the present star formation is occuring outside of the nuclear region of merging galaxies, consistent with recent studies of other double nuclei luminous infrared galaxies. Subject headings: galaxies: individual (NGC 6090) – galaxies: active

We report 0. ′′ 5 × 0. ′′ 9 resolution, interferometric observations of the 1.3 mm CO J=2→1 line in the infrared luminous galactic merger NGC 6240 2. About half of the CO flux is concentrated in a rotating but highly turbulent, thick disk structure centered between the two radio and near-infrared nuclei. A number of gas features connect this ∼500 pc diameter central disk to larger scales.

Most luminous infrared galaxies (LIGs) are closely interacting/merging systems rich in molecular gas. We study here the relationship between the stage of the galaxy-galaxy interactions, the molecular gas mass, and the star formation rate as deduced from the infrared luminosity LIR in LIGs. We find a correlation between the CO(1-0) luminosity (a measure of molecular mass M(H2)) and the projected...

We report on mid-infrared (MIR) continuum and line emission mapping of the nucleus of NGC 253. The data, with a resolution of 1.4, reveal a double-peaked arc-like [NeII] emission region. Comparison with published data shows that the [NeII] arc is centered on the nucleus of the galaxy. The brightest [NeII] source coincides with the infrared continuum peak. The interpretation of these results is ...

Star formation in starbursts appears to be biased toward compact clusters, with up to 20% of all stars formed in them. Observations with HST show that many of these clusters have luminosities (−9 > M V > −16), UBVI colors, and half-light radii (R eff ≈ 3 pc) consistent with their being young globular clusters (YGC). Although we know little about the long-term stability of the youngest clusters ...

We present some highlights from the mid-infrared (5-16 μm) images of mergers of massive galaxies obtained with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). We have observed: 1) ultraluminous infrared nuclei, 2) luminous dust-enshrouded extranuclear starbursts, and 3) active galaxy nuclei (AGNs). In this contribution we discuss the observations of Arp 299, a prototype for very luminous infrared galaxie...
